The "Is-Ought" Problem (Hume's Guillotine)

Descriptive statements explain what is (e.g., "Hitting someone causes physical pain"). Normative statements dictate what ought to be (e.g., "You ought not hit people"). David Hume famously demonstrated that no amount of empirical facts alone can logically force an "ought" without a pre-existing normative premise.

The Logical Gap

To deduce that "I ought not hit person X" from "Hitting person X causes pain," we must insert an unstated normative bridge: "Making an innocent person suffer ought to be avoided." Without this initial prescriptive axiom, descriptive science cannot output moral imperatives.

The Naturalistic Resolution

Our core normative axioms are not handed down by metaphysics, nor are they arbitrary choices. They are biological imperatives. As a social $K$-selection species that invests years in rearing few, high-investment offspring, our nature compels us to seek survival, child protection, and social cohesion. We ought to pursue these because our evolved biology leaves us no choice.

Taxonomy of Major Ethical Frameworks

Before proposing a synthesis, it is vital to understand the primary models used to evaluate moral actions. Each framework provides unique guidance but struggles with fundamental flaws.

01. ABSOLUTISM / DEONTOLOGY

Universal Objective Rules

Actions are inherently right or wrong regardless of consequences (e.g., Kant's Categorical Imperative or Divine Command Theory).

Flaw: Cannot cleanly resolve direct moral dilemmas (e.g., lying to save an innocent life) and ignores the historical evolution of norms.
02. CONSEQUENTIALISM

Utilitarian Outcomes

The moral worth of an act is judged solely by its net consequences (e.g., Bentham & Mill's "greatest good for the greatest number").

Flaw: Suffers from moral luck and can mathematically justify abhorrent acts (e.g., harvesting organs from one to save five).
03. PURE RELATIVISM

Subjective Cultural Preference

Moral judgments are purely subjective expressions of local culture or individual taste with no objective baseline whatsoever.

Flaw: Destroys the possibility of moral progress; completely paralyzes the ability to criticize atrocities across cultures.
04. GAME THEORY / ESS

Equilibrium Dynamics

Morality as Evolutionary Stable Strategies. Rules against free-riding (e.g., Tit-for-Tat) emerge to maintain cooperative utility ($rB > C$).

Flaw: Masterfully explains how strategic cooperation stabilizes, but lacks subjective normative guidance for novel cultural dilemmas.

Synthesized Model: Bio-Social Contingent Realism

This framework unites objective biological constraints with cultural relativity. Basic ethical rules are objectively rooted in species survival needs, while higher-level cultural norms diverge along contingent historical paths.

Tier 1: Objective Biological Invariants

Universal Baseline

Certain moral prohibitions are non-negotiable for human survival. Because humans practice $K$-selection (low offspring count, years of energetic investment per child), protecting young and pregnant mothers is hardwired. Furthermore, group cohesion requires strict prohibitions against random in-group killing and rampant lying (which destroys linguistic trust).

Comparative Biology Counter-Example:

Lions commit infanticide upon taking over a pride to induce female estrus. Fish ($r$-selection) spawn millions of eggs and willingly predate on their young. If lions or fish evolved abstract thought, their "objective" moral frameworks would not categorize infanticide as inherently evil. Human morality is objectively tied to human biology.

Tier 2: Contingent Cultural Trajectories

Relative Applications

Above Tier 1, societies invent arbitrary behavioral norms to foster in-group cohesion (e.g., dress codes, dietary taboos, rituals). While these norms strengthen local identity against rival groups, their specific details carry no objective evolutionary value and can change or be discarded over time.

Case Study: The Suppressed Left Hand

For centuries in Europe, left-handedness was condemned as "sinister" and immoral, resulting in severe physical and psychological punishment. Today, scientific understanding recognizes left-handedness as natural biological variation. Yesterday's "duty" to suppress left-handedness is rightly recognized today as oppressive harm.




MODULE 04

The Architecture of Moral Progress

How do societies "improve" morally? Genuine progress looks vastly different depending on the ethical framework being applied.

IN ABSOLUTISM

Progress is achieved through a clearer revelation, or better philosophical deduction, of the ultimate objective moral law.

IN CONSEQUENTIALISM

Progress relies on better empirical data, allowing us to more accurately calculate and predict outcomes to minimize total suffering.

IN PURE RELATIVISM

Progress is an illusion. Changes are merely horizontal drifts in cultural preference, not vertical improvements.

IN BIO-SOCIAL REALISM

Progress means discarding arbitrary Tier 2 in-group rules when they cause unnecessary suffering, while expanding our grasp of Tier 1 biological survival imperatives.

The Expanding Circle of Consideration

Regardless of the framework (except pure relativism), the most visible historical manifestation of moral progress is the Expanding Circle. As human economic and ecological dependencies grow, the boundary of who (or what) is deemed worthy of moral protection widens.
